Weekend Fish Wrap: Best Get You A Snappy Resume

penut-no

The Fish Wrap: a semi-random assemblage of mildly interesting linkage, mostly centered around business+finance topics, sometimes from personal finance blogs. A carnival of sorts, arranged in no consistent fashion, indifferently curated. Best get you a snappy resume? Why? Because the recruiter will "Command +F the crap out of it", looking for important like keywords like Ruby on Rails. Because another recruiter just abhors cover letters.  Yet another one loves them. Recruiters spend 30 seconds per resume. Or six seconds.  Maybe seven. They use CV-scanning software. Except when they don't. Who the hell knows? Bottom line, read the post for a range of perspectives, including ones from countries other than the … [Read more...]

Sunday Morning Fish Wrap: So Thirsty!

California drought

The Fish Wrap: a spasmodic caboodle of captivating bits and bobs, loosely grouped by subject matter around personal finance, investing, news, and maybe the odd rant or recipe. "Whiskey is for drinkin', water is for fightin'" ~ Mark Twain Well, this is what happens when you live under a self-placed rock, you miss the story of California's ongoing drought. Not that I'm a stranger to this topic, having canvassed door-to-door for a Bay Area environmental group back in college years (hey, I needed the work, starving student and all that...). "Cadillac Desert" by Marc Reisner was almost required reading, as training material for the squads of earnest young people who would cadge donations from enviro-shamed affluent … [Read more...]

Sunday Morning Fish Wrap: Frozen again. Time For Soup.

How about some soup? MMMMMM!!!

The Fish Wrap: a spasmodically sporadic salmagundi of refreshingly readable articles and tidbits, occasionally organized around personal finance, investing, news, and maybe the odd recipe or two.  Another Sunday, another cold front blowing in.  Wind chill below zero, sleet and ice and snow. Good time go out and try the new four wheel drive. Or not. Best to say in and make plan some Minestra di Pane, or Tuscan bread soup.  Minestra di Pane or Zuppa di Pane is not necessarily Ribollita, as widely interpreted.  Ribollita, or re-boiled as literally translated, is eaten as second-day leftovers from the first iteration.  A good, old-world peasant dish given new life by new world chefs.   If you can read Italian, here you go. If not, … [Read more...]

Wednesday Morning Fish Wrap: Fried Fish

fried fish

The Fish Wrap: an infrequent hodge-podge of interesting articles and tidbits, loosely based around personal finance, investing, news and/or food blogs. Might be perhaps arranged by topic, or not. This time, actually features a photo of newspaper and fried fish. And a recipe for fried fish, just for consistency. Steve Jobs is not your friend. Throw away that Star Wars T-shirt.  Read how the top CEOs in Silicon Valley have colluded to keep down engineering wages. What douchebaggery. The post title makes no bones about the sentiment: "Why George Lucas, Eric Schmidt, (and yes, Steve Jobs) Should Go to Jail: Conspiring to Reduce Wages of 100,000 Tech Pros". Anti-trust laws are for the little people, aren't they? In post entirely suited … [Read more...]

Mid-Week Fish Wrap: Shhh, someone’s listening and/or watching

welder

The Fish Wrap: an irregularly recurring mashup of interesting articles and tidbits, occasionally themed around economics and from personal finance blogs. A carnival of sorts, maybe arranged by topic, and suffering from lax editorial standards. Does the fact that someone's watching over your shoulder alter your behavior?  How about a creepy neighbor and a pair of binoculars? In my day job, we test welds on steel pressure welds at a specified percentage, depending on the interpretation of a particular code. A pipe weld which is radio-graphically tested at 5% or 10% may look a little ratty, since visual appearances are not objective acceptance criteria, and still pass x-ray. But change the testing specification to 100% … [Read more...]

Monday Morning (Fukushima) Fish Wrap

ice storm

The Fish Wrap: an occasional gaggle of interesting links, sometimes themed around finance and from personal finance blogs. A carnival of sorts, maybe arranged by topics, but certainly curated with inconsistent editorial standards. It's bloody cold in the heartland. An ice storm swept through a couple days ago, and left trees, power lines, traffic signs and anything more than an inch off the ground sheathed in ice. Temps in the high 20's, not terribly cold and downright balmy to folks from Minnesota and Michigan, but it just looks cold. Here's the worst name ever for a menu dish: Fukushima Fish Wrap. Nevertheless, this might just be showing up in area restaurants if the Japanese Ministry of Information publicists have their way. … [Read more...]

Sunday Morning Fish Wrap: Back from Hiatus

Wish I'd never sold it...

The Fish Wrap: an occasional grouping of interesting links, mostly centered around finance topics, largely from personal finance blogs. A carnival of sorts, this time nicely arranged by topics, and curated with inconsistent editorial standards.   As the title, says, back in the swing of things. The blog went silent from May until November. Such is transient world of blogs, here for a year or two, and poof! A few readers emailed to ask, wha' happened? Ordinary enough reason: the hours spent writing posts are, after all, exactly that: hours. There's only so much free time to go around. Although there are some side benefits to disciplined writing (exercising that idea muscle and toning up that creative side), the odd dollar … [Read more...]

Monday Morning Fish Wrap: Long Live the King

New Dutch King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima and their daughters wave to the crowd Tuesday from the balcony of the royal palace in Amsterdam. (There are oranges on the balcony wreath. Because orange is the Dutch national color, see?)

The Fish Wrap: an occasional grouping of interesting links, mostly centered around finance topics, largely from personal finance blogs. A carnival of sorts, this time nicely arranged by topics, and curated with inconsistent editorial standards.   Back from the Netherlands, where the Dutch had a hell of a party last Tuesday, and woke up with a hangover and a new King. Queen Beatrix (now back to a mere Princess) decided she'd had enough of shaking hands with visiting nobility and other assorted heads of state, cutting ribbons and having to look interested at children spelling bees.  Beatrix handed the keys to the kingdom to Junior, and said good riddance, I'm retired.   Not that every Dutch person is enamored … [Read more...]

Monday Morning Fish Wrap: The Mafia’s Got Wind In Its Pants (pocket)

This is not Sicily

The Fish Wrap: an occasional grouping of interesting links, mostly centered around finance topics, largely from personal finance blogs. A carnival of sorts, arranged in no consistent fashion, and governed by lazy editorial standards. Years ago, Mafia references used to bug me to no end. On learning of my Italian ethnicity, the inevitable quip about criminal parentage would come out. But it helps to turn a perceived weakness into a strength. I learned long ago to reply with with a wink and a nod, and sometimes even a mock affected NY accent "That's right. I know people who know people."* Smiles or laughter or follow-up jokes all around (or even a semi-startled double take), and we get on with business. It's even become a jokey byline … [Read more...]

Sunday Morning Fish Wrap: Habemum Papam!

pio per culo photo

We have a Pope? No, not really. The picture caption is just a very clever play on words in Italian.  And even though we know that if you have to explain a joke, it's no longer funny, we're all about edification here.  So here we go. Pio is the Italianized name for Pius, a common Pontiff monicker. The phrase Pigliare per il culo could be translated politely as "making a fool of" or "taking for a ride", or more crassly and literally, "to grab by the ass" (Spanish speakers will recognize culo).   Pigliare is the Tuscan dialect version of prendere, or "to take".  Hence, Pio is a contraction of the verb's conjugation in first person singular: piglio (pronounce like a double L in spanish: pillo).  Hence: Pio Perculo. See? If you … [Read more...]
